The meaning of Mercury (Buddha) in Vedic Astrology“Believe nothing,
no matter where you read it,
unless it agrees with your own reason
and your own common sense.”
–Buddha

In Vedic mythology Mercury is a child of the Moon. Both Mercury and the Moon have an influence on the mind. However, while the Moon observes and feels, Mercury evaluates and discriminates. Mercury represents the intellect.

As the ruler of the intellect, Mercury has a passion for learning. He governs education and is good at remembering facts. Mercury is a youthful, intelligent, and curious planet with a good sense of humor.

A planet for writers and educators, Mercury rules over all matters of communication. Even telephones, the internet, and short journeys are means of communication and are thus expressions of Mercury.

Mercury also represents commerce and trade where his ability to evaluate and discriminate is needed. He is also good with numbers and rules accounting and record keeping.

A well placed Mercury will give enthusiasm and an ability to communicate well. However, when Mercury is under stress he may be restless and fearful.

Mercury is the discriminating intellect that helps us on our journey towards truth and self knowledge.

Should You Strengthen Mercury?

On a physical level, wearing a gemstone for Mercury can have a calming effect on the central nervous system. Mercury also rules the skin, lungs, throat and neck, and a strong Mercury strengthens the lungs and improves the condition of the skin.

Strengthening Mercury improves speech, writing and other forms of communication. It will also facilitate learning and the use of our discriminating faculties.

A positive Mercury develops analytical thinking and the discriminating aspect of the mind. Mercury enjoys being on a path of knowledge. Wearing a gemstone for Mercury may also assist us in working with healing energy and Prana.

Please note that every planet has positive and negative qualities. Mercury can also have harmful side effects if it is not well placed in your chart. It is important to determine if a gemstone for Mercury is of benefit to you. Have your birth chart analyzed by a Vedic astrologer before you wear an astrological gemstone.
