What Is the Significance of the Sun in Vedic Astrology?

Meaning of the Sun (Surya) in Vedic Astrology“We praise You, Lord, for all Your creatures,
especially for Brother Sun,
who is the day through whom you give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor,
of You Most High, he bears your likeness.”
–St. Francis of Assisi

The Sun rules the day and brings light and illumination to all things. It is the sustaining source of power in our solar system. Without the light, heat and gravitational pull of the Sun, there would be no life on Earth.

In an individual's chart, the Sun (also known as Surya) represents the Self and the Soul. On the physical level, the Sun rules the heart and circulatory system. The Sun expresses our sense of identity and inner authority. He also represents the ego. Through his influence we can feel confidence, express our willpower, and live with vitality. A strong positive Sun is helpful in raising one's level of consciousness.

The Sun can cause harm if he is not well placed in a chart. A strong and malefic Sun can make a person domineering and self-centered. A weak Sun can result in dependency on others and a lack of self-confidence.

When well placed, the Sun expresses power and dignity. The Sun is a significant planet for those in a position of authority and leadership. He also represents the first male authority in our lives - the father.

Should You Strengthen The Sun?

The Sun is a hot planet and wearing a gemstone for the Sun will increase the fire element in our bodies. The Sun's energy influences circulation, vitality and digestion.

The Sun is the center of our solar system, and in our bodies he governs the heart. The Sun radiates light and relates to eye sight. Wearing a gemstone for the Sun is helpful for the heart and improves vision.

On a psychological level a gemstone for the Sun increases self-confidence and creative self-expression. It also strengthens our will power and our leadership abilities.

On a spiritual level the Sun represents the soul (the Atma) and gems for the Sun can increase awareness of the higher Self. The Sun is an important planet on our journey towards Self-realization.

Please note that every planet has positive and negative qualities. The Sun can also cause harm because of his heat and is therefore considered a malefic planet. It is therefore important to determine if a gemstone for the Sun is of benefit to you. Have your birth chart analyzed by a Vedic astrologer before you decide on a gemstone.
