Astrological Highlights: October 2026
October is a month when nature itself signals upcoming change and transformation. We see it in the colors of the trees, in the nights that grow longer, and in the air, which suddenly feels colder.
We adjust and prepare for what is to come. Yet life's circumstances can change quickly and dramatically, and we sometimes ask ourselves: What are we preparing for? What is actually coming?
This month's planetary movements reflect that uncertainty. The first week of October brings two exact oppositions and a planetary war. Over the month, Venus and Mercury turn retrograde, and Pluto turns direct.
Venus Retrograde: A Time to Reassess
Venus turns retrograde in Libra on October 3 and turns direct in Virgo on November 13. A planet is retrograde when it appears, from our view on Earth, to move backward through the zodiac. Retrograde periods favor review over new beginnings.
Venus rules Libra, the sign of the scales, so this retrograde asks us to reassess our relationships and values. Are the scales fairly balanced? Are we compromising our true values? A retrograde Venus can also reconnect us with friends from the past.
From November 5 to November 22, Venus moves back into Virgo, where its focus becomes more analytical and detail-oriented. It is a good time to look over your budget if you need to.
Mercury Joins Venus in Retrograde
Mercury and Venus meet at the same degree of Libra on October 6 and 7, a close conjunction known as a planetary war. Because these two planets are natural friends, this meeting is unlikely to be harsh.
Mercury turns retrograde on October 24 and remains in Libra until it turns direct on November 13.
Right after the US midterm elections on November 3, the two retrograde planets also exchange signs: Mercury is in Libra, a sign ruled by Venus, and Venus is in Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury. This mutual exchange is known as Parivartana Yoga. The powerful exchange calls for careful analysis and re-evaluation before drawing conclusions.
Pluto Changes Direction
On October 3, Mars in Cancer is in exact opposition to Pluto in Capricorn. An opposition occurs when two planets are directly opposite each other in the zodiac. Mars and Pluto in opposition often reveal power struggles and destruction, and Capricorn governs foundations and structures.
Pluto is a small planet with a powerful, transformative energy. During its retrograde, that energy works largely beneath the surface. When Pluto turns direct in Capricorn on October 15, its effects become more visible.
Saturn Challenges the Sun
On October 4, retrograde Saturn in Pisces is in exact opposition to the Sun in Virgo. The Sun represents leadership and authority, while Saturn brings restriction and accountability. Their opposition indicates pressure, especially for world leaders.
Jupiter at a Major Crossroads
The effects of an eclipse can last a long time. The exact degree where an eclipse occurred becomes sensitized, and a planet passing over that degree can trigger its energy.
The solar eclipse of August 12 took place at 25°48′ Cancer. Jupiter crosses that degree on October 3. Mars follows on November 3, the day of the US midterm elections. Mars can bring sudden change and volatility.
From October 23 to February 12, 2027, Jupiter transits the gandanta zone at the junction of Cancer and Leo. Gandanta means "the knot at the end," and this zone is said to hold complex karma. Jupiter's stay is lengthy because it enters Leo on October 31, pauses in the first degrees of Leo, and then returns to Cancer. We can likely expect a time of turmoil and unexpected events.
Plumb the Depths
On October 9, retrograde Saturn moves back into the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada in Pisces, and will stay here until February 8, 2027.
Uttara Bhadrapada is a spiritual nakshatra, the second-to-last of the 27 nakshatras, and it is ruled by Saturn. Pisces is associated with the boundless ocean, but Saturn's discipline in this sign can help us stay focused.
The world faces division and opposition, and we need to watch for manipulation. Saturn in Uttara Bhadrapada reminds us that we have a choice and an opportunity to remain centered and to dive deep within.
The deity of Uttara Bhadrapada is Ahirbudhnya, a mystical serpent of the deep sea. Uttara Bhadrapada tells us that truth can only be found by going deep, beyond the illusion of superficial duality.
Today my mind has dived deep in Thee,
For Thy pearls of love from Thy depthless sea.
Today my mind has dived deep in Thee.
If I find not, I will not blame Thy sea;
I will find fault with my diving.
Today my mind has dived deep in Thee.
