The most significant astrological events in August are the last two eclipses of 2026. A total solar eclipse arrives on August 12, followed by a partial lunar eclipse on August 27-28.
Eclipses reveal mass karma and affect large numbers of people. They also carry personal significance if they fall near a personal planet, especially your Sun, Moon, or Ascendant, the sign that was rising at the moment of your birth.
On August 12, a total solar eclipse will move over Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, and parts of Portugal and Spain. It will be partially visible across much of North America, Europe, and Northwestern Africa.
The eclipse occurs with the Sun and Moon in Cancer, in Ashlesha nakshatra. A nakshatra is one of twenty-seven lunar constellations that add further detail and meaning to each zodiac sign.
Cancer is a sign of home, family, security, and safety.
Ashlesha is ruled by the Nagas. In Sanskrit, a naga is a snake, most often depicted as a cobra. Ashlesha is secretive, cunning, and holds hidden power. Snakes periodically shed their skin, reflecting the change and transformation that are central to this nakshatra's nature.
The energy of an eclipse can be felt before and after it occurs, and much is happening behind the scenes at this time. This eclipse points to accelerating change, in ways not yet visible on the surface.
A solar eclipse always occurs when the Sun and Moon meet at one of the lunar nodes, Rahu or Ketu. These nodes are not physical planets but mathematical points marking where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path. This is a Sun/Ketu eclipse, meaning Ketu is the node involved.
Ketu itself sits ten degrees away, in Leo, in Magha nakshatra. The lunar nodes are not always in the same sign as the Sun and Moon during an eclipse, but their influence still colors its energy.
Magha is a fiery, intense nakshatra; Ketu actually rules it. The eclipsed Sun in Cancer is under pressure, flanked by Ketu in Leo and an active Mars in Gemini. Mars in Gemini sits in the intense Ardra nakshatra, ruled by Rudra, the god of storms.
Europe is currently experiencing severe heat waves. The eclipse is visible in its totality over Spain and Portugal, and France, Spain, Portugal, and other European countries are currently facing wildfires, with many thousands forced to evacuate.
The Sun represents leadership. Ketu lands exactly on Donald Trump's Ascendant during this eclipse, indicating he will be affected by its energy.
The eclipse in Cancer is joined by Mercury and Jupiter, at 10 and 15 degrees respectively. Because they share Cancer with the eclipse, both planets are touched by its energy, though at this distance their influence remains fairly subtle.
Mercury is a key planet here, since it rules Ashlesha, the nakshatra of the eclipse. Mercury also receives a close aspect from Pluto in Capricorn, meaning Pluto's influence reaches across the signs to touch it, bringing an urge to clear out the outdated. Mercury also shares a harmonious relationship with Venus in Virgo, the two planets sitting in signs that naturally support one another, which adds a stabilizing influence.
Jupiter, meanwhile, is no longer combust, the term for when a planet sits so close to the Sun that its light is overwhelmed and its effects are weakened. The combust ends on the day of the eclipse, freeing Jupiter, already exalted in Cancer, to express its wisdom more independently.
The lunar eclipse is visible to most of North and South America, parts of Europe, and Africa. It will also be visible over Greenland, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and Antarctica.
The eclipsed Moon on August 27-28 is with Rahu in Aquarius. This is likely to be a time of mental and emotional intensity, one that stirs a desire to break free, rebel, or start something new. It is also a time of instability, so it helps to stay grounded.
The eclipse takes place in Shatabhisha nakshatra, which centers on healing and a search for truth.
The Sun, Ketu, and Mercury, all in Leo's Magha nakshatra, continue to express dynamic energy, power, and heat.
Eclipses give us an experience of the shadow. When an eclipse is visible, we are told not to look at it directly, since doing so without protective glasses can harm our eyes. Shadows can make us uncomfortable in the same way. Not knowing, not seeing clearly, can give rise to uncertainty, doubt, fear, and anxiety. This is why it helps to be especially mindful during eclipses.
It is also wise to avoid beginning new projects, signing contracts, or scheduling important meetings for three days before and after an eclipse, since the energy during this window is ungrounded and unsettled.
Rahu and Ketu are the shadows we see during eclipses. Ketu expresses dissolution and non-attachment, while Rahu expresses boundless desire and material obsession. Strong reactions can arise during eclipses, but they need not overwhelm us. Instead, we might focus this transformative energy by cleaning and caring for our environment, or by consciously turning toward Light through prayer, service to others, mantra, and meditation. The Gayatri mantra helps us manifest inner light, and the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra offers clearing and protection.
"The Kingdom of God is just behind the darkness of closed eyes, and the first gate that opens to it is your peace. Exhale and relax, and feel this peace spread everywhere, within and without. Immerse yourself in that peace."

Jupiter entered Cancer on June 1, 2026, and will remain here, with one interruption, until June 26, 2027. This is a transit worth understanding in some depth.
The planetary alignments this May are among the most positive of the year, offering genuine support for communication, creativity, and new beginnings.
April 2026 is astrologically intense and unstable. When Mercury enters Pisces on April 10, there will be 5 planets transiting Pisces.
