September is a very unusual month with many planets in dignity in their own signs. After eighteen months in Gemini and Sagittarius, the Lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu move to new signs. Mars begins his retrograde while Jupiter and Saturn end theirs.

A Strong Mercury

Just past midnight on September 2nd Mercury enters Virgo, the sign of it’s exaltation. Mercury stays in Virgo for three weeks. This is great news for Virgo and Gemini since they are Mercury ruled signs. Mercury in Virgo is good with facts and detailed information.

Planets in Dignity

Five planets are in their own signs during the first half of September.

The Sun is in Leo, Mercury is in Virgo, Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Saturn is in Capricorn, and Mars is in Aries. Moon will be in Cancer between September 12 - 14 which adds up to six planets in their own signs. This is very unusual and unprecedented in modern times.

On September 16th the Sun leaves his sign Leo and transits into Virgo, and on September 22nd Mercury moves into Libra.

Jupiter Turns Direct

Jupiter stays at 23 degrees Sagittarius from August 22nd until October 8th. Jupiter turns direct on September 12th after being retrograde but this planet of expansion and hope seems unwilling to move forward.

For those who have planets near 23 degrees Sagittarius Jupiter brings a positive transformation. Jupiter also has a positive influence on the signs he aspects: Aries, Gemini and Leo.

Saturn Turns Direct

Saturn has been in retrograde since May 11th. Saturn is always slow moving, but from August 27th to October 30th he hardly moves at all. Saturn stations between one and two degrees Capricorn during this time. He turns direct on September 29th.

If your moon is near 1 degree Capricorn this period can be challenging. Be sure to give nurturing energy to yourself and get plenty of rest.

Rebellious Mars

It is positive to have the two major planets, Jupiter and Saturn, going direct, and have so many planets in dignity.

However, during the next few months we need to pay attention to Mars and Ketu who will both express unstable energy.

Mars is now settled in Aries after going through the turbulent gandanta zone between Pisces and Aries in August. The energy of Mars can be forceful. When this energy is positive Mars expresses courage, potency and stamina. Mars will fight not just for himself but also for the rights of others. Aries is symbolized by the Ram who defends and guards a territory. The ram does not back away from a fight if his territory is threatened.

When the energy of Mars is negative it turns into anger and violence. Aries is a sign that can express head-on combat.

Mars will begin a long retrograde this month and on his journey back to Pisces from Aries he will be in gandanta again. While in gandanta, Mars will have turbulent energy.

Key Dates for Mars Transits in Late 2020

  • Mars is retrograde between September 9th and November 23rd
  • Mars is in gandanta from October 1st - October 6th
  • Mars returns to Pisces on October 3rd.
  • Mars returns to Aries from Pisces on December 23rd
  • Mars is in gandanta from December 21st to December 25th
  • Mars is in Aries from December 23rd until February 21st, 2021

An Unstable Ketu

A big event in September is the changing of signs for Rahu and Ketu. After eighteen months in Gemini / Sagittarius it is time for the lunar nodes to move on. Because they always move retrograde, Rahu moves into Taurus on September 23rd (mean nodes) and Ketu moves into Scorpio.

Rahu’s move into Taurus does not need to be dramatic. Rahu remains in Mrigashira nakshatra as this nakshatra extends from 23” 20’ in Taurus to 6” 40’ in Gemini.

However, Ketu’s transit into Scorpio may prove to be much more dramatic. Ketu moves through the gandanta zone from Sagittarius to Scorpio. Ketu is in gandanta from September 14th to September 29th (Mean node).

The beginning of Sagittarius is Mula nakshatra and the end of Scorpio is Jyeshta nakshatra. Mula gandanta and Jyeshta gandanta can be difficult and tumultuous. Ketu has a strong connection to past karma and can bring sudden changes and losses to the present. Ketu can also be feisty and has hot energy similar to Mars.

During this time Mars and Ketu are influencing one another. We need to be vigilant about hurricanes and fires. Mars also represents the police and military. The social unrest will likely continue and perhaps escalate.

On a more positive note this is an excellent time to understand and research the basics of something you are interested in. Mula means root and brings an understanding of the origin and core-meaning. Saturn in Capricorn can provide a basic foundation and structure for a positive transformation during Ketu’s transit in Scorpio. Ketu is strong in Scorpio but the tail of Scorpio contains karmic poison that needs to be dealt with.

We do live in interesting times!
