This December begins with a powerful full Moon that reveals resistance to change, and later brings a new Moon that signals powerful shifts and new beginnings. We also see a cluster of planets moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius throughout the month.
The last full Moon of the year can be seen high in the sky on December 4. It will be slightly larger and brighter than usual. That’s because the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.
“Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”
–John C Maxwell
The full Moon appears in the sign of Taurus, in the Rohini nakshatra, which is said to be the Moon’s favorite place in the sky. This is because Rohini offers prosperity, beauty, and emotional fulfillment.
In the Vedic mythology, the Moon is unwilling to leave the beauty and comfort of Rohini. A challenging expression of the Moon in Rohini is an unwillingness to leave the comfort zone.
Taurus is a fixed sign, and the Moon, the Sun, Rahu, and Ketu are exactly opposite and square to one another in what is called a grand cross. A grand cross, especially in the fixed signs, reveals a resistance to change and likely a sense of being stuck.
So, how do we get unstuck? How do we prepare for a change?
The Moon teaches us that change is an essential part of life. Trusting, releasing, and letting go are necessary for accepting change and moving forward. The Moon shows us the importance of being flexible and adaptable.
Jupiter, the planet of expansion, knowledge, and truth, returns to Gemini on December 5th.
Jupiter’s transit back into Gemini indicates that we have more to learn about truth and communication.
Interestingly, Mercury moves into Scorpio the day after Jupiter retrogrades back to Gemini. Mercury is a planet of communication and is deeply analytical in Scorpio.
Scorpio, a sign that preserves, is nevertheless also a sign of profound transformation. Scorpio will have four planets transiting: Mercury, Venus, Sun, and Mars. Scorpios are analytical and examining. This can be a time when deep, hidden secrets suddenly come to the surface.
With Mars transiting into Sagittarius on December 7, a planetary migration over to Sagittarius begins. The Sun follows on December 15, Venus on December 19, and Mercury on December 28.
Sagittarius has a desire for truth and is associated with ethics, law, and dharma. Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and the retrograde Jupiter in Gemini now aspects its own sign.
The first nakshatra in Sagittarius, Moola nakshatra, is significant this month because this is where the new Moon and the winter solstice take place.
Moola means root; it is symbolized by a tied bundle of roots. Moola expresses the roots, the foundation, the origin. Being an excellent nakshatra for research and investigation, it uncovers the essence.
But Moola can also be uprooting. Moola can shake us up and signal fundamental change– sometimes destructive changes. Nirriti, the Goddess of dissolution and misfortune, is said to rule this nakshatra. Ultimately wanting to liberate us, Moola can be fierce, releasing us from the illusions of material permanency.
December is the darkest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Sun is at its darkest on December 21, the winter solstice.
The new Moon is on December 19, just before the winter solstice. A new Moon gives no light at all.
The Sun, Moon, and Mars are in Moola nakshatra with Saturn, Ketu, and Jupiter Retrograde, aspecting it. Venus is in Gandanta, the cusp between Scorpio and Sagittarius.
A time with little external light from the luminaries is a perfect time to seek the inner Light. It is a great time to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the year to come.
"With the beginning of the New Year, let us with concentrated resolve and spiritual determination enter into a new era of our lives."
–Paramahansa Yogananda
Many Blessings and a Happy New Year!

Seven planets are retrograde this November, making this a suitable time for reflection, reevaluation, and deep introspection.
Jupiter is very influential this October. The planet will move to Cancer, the sign of his exaltation on October 18– but only for a short time before returning again to Gemini.
In September 2025, we will see two eclipses. Eclipses are powerful and serve as catalysts for change in the world.
